Briar Cheatham scores 604 Late Model victory at East Alabama Motor Speedway

Florida Racer Pockets $1,200 Jimmy Thomas Memorial

PONCE DE LEON, Fla. (04/16/25) – In a defining moment of his emerging career, 15-year-old Briar Cheatham secured a milestone victory in Saturday’s Jimmy Thomas Memorial at East Alabama Motor Speedway aboard his D&H Sand Inc. / Three Trade Consultants / No. 87 Capital Race Cars Late Model.

The Florida native, making just his third Late Model start of the 2025 campaign, earned a $1,200 payday in the Crate Late Model portion of the annual event.

“This one means the world to me,” Cheatham said. “Getting to celebrate with my whole family by my side just made it that much more special. There are many people I owe thanks to, but none more than my family. My dad, who serves as my crew chief, my pawpaw and Grandma, and the friends who consistently show up to lend a hand — their support means everything to me.”

Cheatham also acknowledged the facility upgrades at East Alabama Motor Speedway, which stood out to him during his first appearance at the 3/8-mile oval since late 2024.

“We hadn’t been here since last November, and the improvements they’ve made are impressive,” Cheatham noted. “It’s clear a lot of effort has gone into upgrading this place, and to earn the biggest win of my career here makes it even more special. This is only my fourth year in racing, so to enjoy a moment like this at such an outstanding facility is pretty awesome.”

Cheatham’s weekend kicked off with a three-hour trek north to East Alabama Motor Speedway (Phenix City, Ala.) on Saturday to pilot his Red Bay Concrete No. 87 Late Model for the annual Jimmy Thomas Memorial.

With time trials setting the grid for the feature, Cheatham laid down a 16.036-second lap, which positioned him on the second row for the 20-lap main event. Making quick progress, he moved up to second place by lap six and was on pace to finish in that position. However, after the original race winner failed post-race technical inspection, Cheatham was awarded the $1,200 victory.

Saturday’s triumph marked his first win of the 2025 season.
